Toddler's Death Ruled Homicide By Assault In DC, Police Say

The death of a Southwest DC toddler has been ruled a homicide after authorities say evidence points to an assault.

Cops were called around 9 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 18 to the unit block of Atlantic Street on a report of an unconscious child, according to the Metropolitan Police Department.

Responding officers found an unresponsive 2-year-old boy, who was rushed to an area hospital by EMS workers.

However, due to the severity of the child's injuries, he died five days later on Tuesday, Oct. 18.

Authorities identified the toddler as 2-year-old Mars Jones, of Southwest, DC.

An autopsy on the child's body revealed that the cause of death was complications of inflicted trauma and the manner of death was ruled homicide.

Metropolitan police are now offering a reward of up to $25,000 for information that leads to the arrest and conviction of the person or persons responsible for the crime.
